September 2024 contract wins: Industry leaders secure new deals across the UK

Some of the UK’s top contractors and consultants have secured new projects spanning water infrastructure, renewable energy, and transportation.

Top contractors and consultants in civil engineering have secured significant new projects, ranging from water infrastructure upgrades to renewable energy initiatives. Here’s a roundup of the latest contract wins shaping the future of the UK’s infrastructure.

Wessex Water is partnering with contractors including Kier and Galliford Try to deliver a £3.7bn framework aimed at improving services for 2.9 million customers by 2030. The AMP8 program focuses on enhancing water infrastructure across the region.

In a bid to address stormwater overflow issues, Yorkshire Water has formed an alliance with AtkinsRéalis, Morrison Water Services, Stantec, and Ward & Burke. The £1bn investment aims to improve stormwater systems over the next five years.

Northern Ireland Water has awarded a total of £800m to Mott MacDonald, Stantec, and WSP for a capital works framework. The project aims to enhance water infrastructure and sustainability across Northern Ireland.

Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £363m contract by National Grid for the Bramford to Twinstead project. The project will bolster East Anglia’s electricity network, playing a key role in the UK's transition to Net Zero by 2030.

GRAHAM has been awarded a £17.5m contract for infrastructure development in Lincoln’s Western Growth Corridor. The project includes constructing a new bridge and junction to improve local connectivity.

A joint venture between Jacobs and Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Thames Water as the technical partner for the Teddington Direct River Abstraction project. The initiative will enhance London’s drought resilience, potentially providing up to 75 million litres of water daily by 2033.

Octavius Regional Civil Engineering, in partnership with Kier Transportation, will upgrade key junctions including Sandy Lane and Harleston Road as part of the Northampton Northwest Relief Road programme. The improvements will enhance traffic flow and safety.

Galliford Try has been named the new contractor for the £89.2m Banwell Bypass project. Construction is expected to begin by late 2024.

Bam Nuttall and Siemens Energy will build substations as part of the £900m Orkney-Caithness Link project, connecting 220MW of renewable energy by 2028.

BAM, Arup, and Amey have secured a share of a £2bn contract from Network Rail to deliver the TransPennine Route Upgrade. The project will transform travel between Huddersfield and Leeds.

Knights Brown has been awarded the £22.3m contract to deliver the final phase of Portsmouth’s £86m coastal defence scheme. The project will add 1.9km of flood defences, protecting thousands of properties.

Balfour Beatty has won a £27m contract to build 2.8km of flood defences in Comrie, Scotland, safeguarding 200 homes and businesses from future flooding.
