The Rise of Octavius Infrastructure

A Transformational Journey from Osborne to Industry Leader

In civil engineering and construction, it's common to see companies disappear while others emerge, winning big contracts seemingly out of nowhere. This is largely driven by mergers and acquisitions (M&A) within the industry. Octavius Infrastructure is a prime example of this trend, having transitioned from the established Osborne to a growing force in the industry. Let's dive in to the strategic moves behind their rise.

The Osborne Legacy

Osborne was founded in Chichester in 1966 by the late Geoffrey Osborne, a visionary civil engineer who graduated from Birmingham University with a first class honours degree in civil engineering in 1943. Osborne wanted his civil engineering company to be driven by principles of trust and outstanding customer service.

The company, with a lifetime portfolio of projects boasting over £5 billion, has crafted landmarks such as the Armed Forces Memorial and the Leigh Road Bridge in Slough.

Osborne also delivered projects like the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain and the adoption of innovative construction methods, demonstrated the company's versatility and commitment to innovation.

Innovation at Osborne: The Autoripage System

Osborne's knack for innovation shone in the 1990’s and 2000’s with their adoption of the Autoripage system, a French-developed technique for sliding large structures safely and efficiently into place. This approach was a game-changer in major infrastructure projects, significantly reducing risks and complexities. A prime example of its application was the £65M Shortlands junction improvement in Kent, a pivotal project for Osborne. Here, they utilised the Autoripage system to construct an underpass at a crucial Eurostar route bottleneck.

Challenges and Adaptations

The Covid-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for Osborne, leading to delays and financial strains. These difficulties necessitated a strategic reassessment of the company's direction and priorities.

Transition to Octavius Infrastructure

In 2021, in response to these challenges, the £200m revenue Osborne Infrastructure underwent a transformation. Steered by Sullivan Street Partners, a UK-based mid-market private equity investment firm. This pivotal phase saw the evolution of Octavius Infrastructure.

This strategic shift, more a de-merger than a mere rebranding, refocused on railways and highways to leverage existing strengths and streamline operations for enhanced market presence and efficiency.

Strategic Acquisitions by Octavius Infrastructure

Under the stewardship of Sullivan Street Partners, Octavius Infrastructure has made significant strides, including the add-on acquisition of Navitas Engineering Group, a specialist in railway electrification, engineering, and design.

This acquisition, along with the earlier purchase of R&W Civil Engineering Limited, has bolstered Octavius's capabilities, adding expertise in detailed design work, technical standards, and project management. These strategic moves have cemented Octavius's status as a leading provider of transport infrastructure solutions in the UK.

Octavius Infrastructure: A New Chapter

With its Osborne heritage and these strategic acquisitions, Octavius Infrastructure has established itself as a Tier 1 supplier in the transport infrastructure sector. The company's growing portfolio, featuring significant projects and partnerships with organisations like Network Rail and National Highways, continues Osborne's tradition of excellence. The focus has now shifted to expanding capabilities in these areas, driven by innovation and growth.
